Burke & Wills – a tough morning

The ride into the remote Burke and Wills roadhouse was extremely tough.  May be we thought the worst was over and we got a bit complacent. May be the heat was getting to us afterall this time on the road or may be the endless bitumen proved mentally hard to follow for hours on end.  The final 20km of head wind seemed cruel at this stage in the ride and each rotation of the crank was killing us.  Cars and 4WDs would over take us effortlessly – we wondered what they were thinking seeing us two plod along at 15kmph.

We limped in to Burke and Wills around 11am and headed straight to the bar.  I was really exhausted – more so than at any other stage of the ride and it took me the rest if the afternoon to feel right again.  We talked to some other travellers, Scott and Jo and who work on Miranda Downs up near Karumba.  They’re cooks on a cattle station from Tassie and started travelling around Australia a couple of years ago together in their 4WD.  They’ve worked all over Australia like many other couples we’ve met in the last three weeks and they’re just loving it.  They invited us to stay with them if we get time.  They only live 150km down the dirt track from Karumba :o)
