The Bob Trailer and Old Man Mountain rack use the same skewer system to mount on to the bike. This posed a problem, how do we mount both at the same time?
Our first idea was to bolt the rack to the trailer using two pre-existing holes on the trailer. The idea would work, in as much as we would get the rack on to the bike but I wanted to sound the idea out with Shane, a long time friend who I travelled up Cape York with many years ago. Shane’s travelled extensively throughout outback Australia including the Birdsville Track and is pretty handy with a box of tools!
Shane noticed a problem with the idea. The trailer will need to be able to move in a vertical arc when we travel over rocks, with the rack in place and fixed to the trailer, the rack will inhibit the movement and will force the rack to move – more than likely causing it to break. Duh!
We set to coming up with a new solution. We’ll use a metal repair and patching compound to make two specially fitted buttresses within the rear chain stay – this will provide a neat housing for the two high tensile screws needed to thread through the OMM brackets. We mocked up a solution with stainless steel screws and washers and it worked a treat!
I’ll pick up the solution this week and nip round on the weekend to complete.
